Small Mercies
by Margot Sullivan
Linked stories set in a Connecticut river town over the course of one summer. A high school teacher is having an affair with a colleague. There's a teenager running a bait shop who finds a wallet with eight thousand dollars in it, and a retired judge who's losing her memory and hiding it from her family. They cross paths in small ways — a borrowed boat, a favor that goes wrong. I wrote this between novels when I needed to remember what it felt like to finish something.
